The bottom bracket has one of the biggest jobs to handle during the cyclist’s ride. Torsion loads during pedaling can put the bottom bracket bearings through a tremendous stress. If a bottom bracket shell is not faced, it can cause the bearings to not align with each other from right to left side. In this case, you can have abnormal wear to the bearing races due to bad alignment. Ever wonder why you have a ‘creek’ that you cannot get rid of? This tool not only faces the bottom bracket shell, it also chases the threads so the bottom bracket bearing set can be installed smoothly and accurately.
Facing allows the bottom bracket to properly seat in the shell and have both bearings parallel to one another.

Reaming the shell helps allow the bottom bracket to thread in without any trouble.

Any creaks or funny noises from this area usually is caused from this process being overlooked at build time.

After paint, the bottom bracket threads are full of over spray and need to be reamed… And the shell needs to be faced.
This shell was faced and reamed before paint, yet look at all the paint being taken off!
The final result is a clean shell that will guarantee that the bottom bracket will be installed accurately.
