The Concern: $255 invested into a crankset that the manufacture created a unique bottom bracket and is no longer supplying a replacement- or worse yet, you have a set of original bearings and you just never liked the way they performed.
Solution: The Desperado's Shims.
Using the Shimano compatible external bottom bracket you have finally achieved what these crankset were capable of.
Heck, you can even go ceramic with the Hope external bottom bracket or Stainless with the Phil Wood unit.
The shims are constructed with 304L stainless tubing that I machine into the actually shim and then silver braze a steel washer to the end. I have had these CNC machined but went back to hand making them one at a time because I could not get the tolerances that I wanted - less than .002 of an inch. These puppies are tight!
The split in the washer helps with differences in tolerances between the bottom bracket and spindles. I recommend using anti-seze grease compound when installing and the excess will find its way into the space of the split. This will keep the system sealed.
Clearance is to be a minimal of 12mm or .5 inch between the bottom bracket face of your frame and the chainring bolts. It is recommended that you use "Button Head" bolts on your chainrings.
If you are looking for a replacement for your cro-molly crank, look no further than the Gusset 853 Reynolds tubing units. Available in either 170mm or 175, these are the perfect solution to solving the need for an addition to your steel crankset collection.
Make sure that you have at least 12mm or .5 inches of clearance. Button Head bolts work best.
