The fork is mostly taken for granted in what it does for the overall ride. A bicycle that will steer from the seat of the pants is well balance. Most production road forks have a 40 or 43mm rake (offset) on the fork and off road is around 45mm. The less rake, the quicker and less predicable the handling. I prefer a 42mm for road riding. If you already have a fork and you are purchasing a frame, then make sure that the distance from the center of the hub axle to the top of the headset crown race are compatible with the frame's design (i.e.; let me know of your intentions). All this can add up to a change of geometry because of the change of the head tube relationship with the fork and headset. When purchasing a fork for a frame that you already have, contact the builder for this information or measure these areas yourself.. I highly recommend a custom Desperado Cycle's hand made fork to complement your ride. If you have a desire to use a carbon fork, I have many to chose from. Jalon Hawk |
